Testimonials

“Ontario’s assessment system for internationally educated health professionals is very advanced. As a result, Ontario is able to play a leadership role at the national level through CEHPEA.”
Jeff Goodyear

CEHPEA uses a standard assessment process for all candidates.

Creating a Gold Standard for Assessment and Training in Canada

“CEHPEA has focused on what it does best – building a world-class centre for rigorous and objective assessment.”

The Centre for the Evaluation of Health Professionals Educated Abroad (CEHPEA) is the only organization in Ontario that provides assessment, evaluation and training programs for internationally educated health professionals. With state-of-the-art examination and education facilities in downtown Toronto, CEHPEA is the largest assessment centre of its kind in Canada.

  • All applications for assessment are screened by CEHPEA to ensure that candidates meet the basic eligibility requirements.
  • All candidates who meet the basic eligibility requirements are invited to participate in a Clinical Examination 1 (CE1).
  • All Advanced Specialty Candidates who meet the basic eligibility requirements are invited to participate in a Specialty Written Examination (SWE).
  • Candidates who wish to apply for Ophthalmology must have already written and successfully passed the ICO Examination and must submit results to CEHPEA as part of the mandatory documents.
  • The CE1 is required by the Ontario Universities' Program Directors for all candidates registering for the SWE and CE2 for the following specialties:.
    • Anesthesia
    • Psychiatry
    • Obstetrics/Gynecology

Successful PGY2 and PRA candidates may be assigned to one of the residency programs in Ontario, i.e., one of McMaster University, University of Ottawa, Queen's University, University of Toronto, or University of Western Ontario - such an assignment may include an educational experience in a satellite clinical teaching site associated with the respective program.

Applicants already in a residency training program or that have completed a residency training program in the province of Ontario are not eligible for PGY2 or PRA assessment.

Please note that selection of candidates will be the responsibility of the program directors of the respective residency programs at the Ontario universities' medical schools. CEHPEA is not involved in selection or placement of candidates.
