SWE Information - Specialty Specific Written ExaminationSpecialty Specific Written Examination (SWE) is a series of specialty specific examinations designed to test a candidate's appropriateness for the PGY2 or Practice Ready Assessment levels in the specialty stream. All eligible candidates who wish to be assessed at these levels will be required to complete one of these specialty specific examinations. Important Policy Updates SWE Score Reports The Specialty Written Examination (SWE) score reports will remain valid for a three year period. This applies to all the Certificates of Assessment from the 2007-2008 application cycle. Candidates planning on using a prior year's Certificate of Assessment for a specialty application (SWE or CE2), to be considered for the 2010-2011 application cycle it is MANDATORY that you apply and pay the application fee to be considered for a position. All candidates applying for specialty assessment at the PGY2 and/or PRA level will be invited to both the SWE and CE2 examinations. It is mandatory to pass both the written and clinical examinations in order to be eligible for a PYG2 or PRA position. CE1 is Now Required for Some Specialites The CE1 is required by the Ontario Universities Program Directors for all candidates registering for the SWE and CE2 for the following specialties:
Candidates will be accommodated into one of the available CE1 dates. 2010 - 2011 SWE Schedule: Dates will be provided as examination dates become available.

Note: In order to be considered eligible for the PGY2 assessment, candidates should have completed at least one year of postgraduate education in the specialty to which they are applying - e.g. a candidate who wishes to be considered in Psychiatry should have at least 1 year of postgraduate education in Psychiatry. Practice Ready Assessment (PRA) applicants must have been in independent practice within the last 5 years.
If a specialty stream candidate wishes to be considered for all possible levels, i.e. PGY1, PGY2 and Practice Ready Assessment, s/he must complete the MCCEE, the General Comprehensive Clinical Examination (CE1), the MCCQE - Part 1 and the Specialty Specific Written Examination (SWE). Therefore:
If a specialty stream candidate does not complete the Specialty Specific Written Examination (SWE) s/he will not be considered for the PGY2 or Practice Ready Assessment levels.
