Assessing Physicians’ Readiness for Entry Level Training (PGY1)
The backgrounds of International Medical Graduates (IMGs) seeking residency in Ontario are diverse and varied. Some IMGs may be students studying abroad with limited experience, while others may have been practicing physicians for many years. The application process is extremely competitive and the National Assessment Collaboration (NAC) Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) provides a tool for selecting the best candidates for entrance into a Canadian residency. It is a national, standardized examination that tests the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for entrance into postgraduate training in Canada.
Although the NAC OSCE is not mandatory for IMGs applying for entry-level postgraduate training positions (PGY1) through the matching service administered by the Canadian Resident Matching Service, it provides University Residency Program Directors with important information about candidates’ clinical skills.
CEHPEA is administering the NAC OSCE as a partner in the National Assessment Collaboration. CEHPEA is one of five assessment centres in Canada to offer the exam.
